Android Market finally gets a facelift and some updates after launching less than a year ago in order to try and compete better with the Apple App Store and ahead of the launch of HTC Hero on Sprint network.
Android Market for Android 1.6 hopes to improve the overall experience for users. For one thing, developers will be able to provide screenshots, promotional icons, and descriptions that will better show off applications and games. Also four new sub-categories for applications have been added - sports, health, themes, and comics. This is great news for all T-Mobile G1 and myTouch 3G owners!

Sprint to officially welcome HTC Hero on October 11
October 11 is going to be a good day. Sprint has finally fessed up that they have been planning an Android invasion after all. The second carrier in the USA market to carry an Android Googles mobile OS, Sprint seems to think that Android is the wave of the future, and a great way to counter the iPhone-effect. HTC has already made 2 devices, T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G, for T-Mobile USA running this newest open-source platform.
The phone itself will be $179.99 with a 2 year contract after discounts. Although there are some great points to note about the latest Android smartphone to land in the US market, the best is probably its Sense UI. It works seamlessly to keep you connected and updated with your contacts and your friends and life taking social interaction and networking to a whole new level.
We did a full review of the Hero last month so check that out for more details!
HTC Hero coming to USA after all?
This Best Buy screen shot courtesy of BGR clearly shows that HTC Hero is possible for pre-order starting on September 13th. Actual date of when it will go on sale is not yet known. Ive had this phone for a few weeks now and it is awesome. The interface is clean and Android is much more powerful here than on the T-Mobile G 1 and the recently released myTouch 3G.

New HTC Hero
Hey everyone, I have gotten the pleasure of un-boxing HTC Hero today! I was not expecting to be become a fan of this phone, but the more I handled it and saw the different features the more I liked it. The Hero is a fully touch screen phone with only the basic keys such as volume, call control, home key, menu, and back button as well as the track ball. A welcome addition to the keys is the "search" button, a clever expansion that allows the user to search the phone and/or the web with just a touch of the button.
As a person who characterizes herself as a "keyboard texter", meaning I rather phones with keys ie. G1, Sidekick, Blackberry, I was very interested to see how the all touchscreen keypad would perform compared to other phones. With that in mind I conducted my own experiment using three phones which feature touchscreen keyboards, the iPhone, G1 and of coarse the HTC Hero. I proceeded to type a text message with each phone, to get an idea of how each phone worked with letters and numbers.
The G1s keys were lack luster compared to the other phones but that is to be expected since it also has a full slide out keypad. Next I typed the same text on the iPhone I was not surprised at the sensitivity and precision of the keys. I also enjoyed the fact that it automatically fixes words in some cases as well as adds punctuation. Over all I was very satisfied with the iPhone. Last I tried the Hero. I noticed first that unlike the iPhone and G1 I do not have to push another button to switch alpha keys to number keys, all the I have to do is hold the key down and it automatically places the number or punctuation in place. I had an issue with how small the keys were when upright, but they do get larger once its turned to the side-view. My main concern with typing in the side-view is the light sensors, located at the top of the phone on both ends of the speaker, dim the screen whenever it gets dark. This means if your typing and your hand obstructs the sensor the screen darkens, which can become annoying while your trying to type. On the other hand the sensitivity and intuitiveness of the Heros keypad is equal if not better than the iPhone and G1 in my opinion.
After my experiment with the keypads I was curious to see how this phone would handle online surfing, since i am almost always on the Internet from my phone. One of the most gratifying features of the Hero is its ability to display Flash. This means online gaming, video, and thousands of other flash enhancements that are on the web are now available from your phone! With this new technology users can now see eighty percent of all content on the web!
The phone also features the new "HTC Sense" which allows the phone to work in a more simple and natural way. The phone is fully customizable and has cool features such as "Profiles". Which allow the user to create different looks and setups depending the users needs. So if I am at work i can setup a "Work" profile with my work email, work contacts, files and documents. Then when Im off I could switch it to a "Weekend Profile" where only music, social networks, and fun apps are visible.
There are so many great features to HTC Hero I will be avidly looking forward to its release in the states this fall!
New Facebook App for Android Just Around the Corner
Those of us that use an Android-based mobile phone, such as a G1 or a HTC Magic, know how terrible or literally non-existent the Facebook App is for this mobile operating system. Well thats apparently getting ready to change.
It seems that while Facebook has been making leaps and bounds in developing a great application for the iPhone userbase, they have always seen Android/Google as competition and hence were never too keen to develop a proper app for Android community. However, now that there are going to be so many Android phones coming out in the next few month, Facebook cant ignore the issue for any longer. A new application is due out any day now.
Right now if you access the fBook App for Facebook you will see how pathetic the application is. You will barely be able to see a few updates and comments, most of them not even really getting updated even on a daily basis. The way the feed is given doesnt make any sense and pretty much its assumed that if you really want to access facebook then you have to go to the actual facebook website and login via your mobile browser.
Dont get me wrong... the new Facebook app for Android is still not going to be anywhere near the cool one for iPhone but it will have the full Facebook stream and status updates which are the two main things when you want to check your facebook page while out and about.
Also, of note, Android is going to be getting a whole lot of new apps in the month of August.

HTC Hero Details - Part 1
HTC Hero will be the first Android-based phone with a customized user interface. Hero comes packed with HTC Sense which promises an intuitive and seamless experience.
HTC Sense will put you at the focus of things making your phone work naturally helping you connect and organize tasks easily in your own terms.
The phone fits in your hand well and also against your face making it easy to handle. If iPhone has an oleophobic screen then Hero has an anti-fingerprint screen coating which is smudge resistant and gives a clear display.
The beautiful white soft Teflon coating make the surface of the phone durable and soft to touch. Now we have a smart looking phone vying for the top position. iPhone may have to make way.
The 3.2 inch HVGA display helps you browse and enjoy multimedia content but also keeping the phone small and smug in the hand. The device also features GPS, digital compass, gravity-sensor, 3.5mm stereo headset jack, a 5 mega-pixel autofocus camera and expandable MicroSD memory. Some surprising features are turning the phone to silence a ring, and viewing content like emails, photos etc. in different ways.
HTC Hero will be the first Android phone with support for Adobe Flash Platform technology. Go ahead and access Flash based content on the Web. As most videos online are delivered with Flash you can enjoy rich Web content on-the-go.

Now, here’s the real bummer – as of now neither AT&T nor Tmobile are planning to bring this to the USA market.
